We just received this WONDERFUL donation at the check-in desk. What is the most wonderful thing about it? It comes from someone Arlington Life Shelter helped 10 years ago who is now in a position to give back. Thank you so much to those who pass the blessings they have received to the next person in need.

“They think their mom is taking care of their grandma,” he said as he nodded to the 4 and 2 year old little girls playing with volunteers. Usually we think of single mothers coming to the shelter in need, but often these days it’s single dads. He described how they married young when he still played ball and the future looked bright, shiny, and new. The first daughter came at the same time as the blown out knee, but as he set the hope of a scholarship aside, he moved on to find work to support their growing family. Daughter number two came the same month as the layoff. He was working several part-time jobs to make ends meet and thought they were doing ok, but shortly before the youngest girl’s 2nd birthday, he came home from the night shift to find his children at the neighbor’s and the Dear John letter propped on the bed. Down to one breadwinner and already behind, the car was repossessed and soon he lost the apartment. He said it was hard to admit that he had let his family fall so far, but it was even harder to find a shelter that would allow him to stay with his girls. At Arlington Life Shelter he was able to turn it all around. The girls went to day care and pre-school, and he was able to pay down the bills and regroup. With a promotion to full-time and money in the bank, he moved out into an apartment of his own and today he is the manager for a local catering company and his kids are both in school and doing well. He comes back to the shelter whenever he has openings to hire others in need and give them another chance. To him and all the other fathers out there making a better life for their families, Happy Father's Day!

Tim Harris in Albuquerque, NM owns a restaurant called Tim's Place. Some people think his story is remarkable because he is the owner and has Down Syndrome, but if you check out his website or his restaurant, what is amazing is the customer service, food, and hugs they are serving up. His website is www.timsplaceabq.com - His restaurant is known "as the world's friendliest restaurant " and his website has a running count of how many hugs have been served, the last count I saw was 32,475. You can go to Tim's website and send him a wish or watch the amazing videos from when he was featured on CNN and other news broadcasts.

89 men, women, and children left the shelter this morning - sack lunch in hand - off to school, work, and job hunting. Six went searching for an apartment, the newest clients in our Transitional Housing program. Thirty-three went off to jobs in our community - one caught a ride over to his job at the General Motors plant, others on their way to restaurant, day labor, and office jobs. Ten slung their backpacks on and headed to AISD classrooms. Eighteen hit the pavement to resume their job search. Another twelve gathered their meager belongings and hit the streets, not yet willing to believe they can change their lives and back to homelessness until the next cold night or hot day drives them to seek shelter. One exited this morning, spending tonight in his own apartment after saving up and getting clean. Last lunch sack in hand, he walked out the door and into his new life. Just another morning at Arlington Life Shelter.
